 Introduction

Dr. Chennattucherry John Joseph is a UK trained psychiatrist who is now working in Kerala. He completed his medical graduation from Calicut Medical College, Kerala in the year 1999. Having successfully completed the PLAB (Professional Linguistic Assessment Board) test by UK General Medical Council, Dr Joseph joined the Psychiatry basic specialist training programme in South Wales under the Welsh Deanery in 2001. After obtaining the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK, Dr Joseph joined the General Adult Psychiatry higher specialist training programme under the Northern Deanery in Newcastle. Dr Joseph has approximately 10 years of work experience in the UK, 4 years in Australia and 5 years in India.

Dr Joseph has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of adult mental health problems and has had training in various subspecialties of psychiatry including consultation liaison psychiatry, child psychiatry, intellectual disability, forensic psychiatry, old age psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, substance misuse and rehabilitation psychiatry during his 6 years long training in the UK. UK psychiatric training has strong emphasis on the use of psychosocial interventions and Dr Joseph has had significant training and exposure to various psychotherapeutic techniques including, but not limited to cognitive behavioural therapy, transactional analysis and personal construct psychotherapy.

Dr Joseph returned to India in late 2014 and established a mental health clinic with the help of Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly where he hopes to apply the knowledge and expertise, he acquired abroad to help the local population. As he originates from India, he is very much aware of the unique sociocultural context and therefore able to adapt the Western principles of modern mental health care to the Indian context in order to deliver high quality care tailored to the unique needs of the local population.

Consultation at Brain and Mind Clinic, Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly:

Dr Joseph is available for consultation at the Brain and Mind Clinic, Little Flower hospital, Angamaly. Prior booking is not essential, but priority would be given to those patients who have made booking in advance. Appointments can be booked via the hospital reception which operates from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday except on hospital holidays.


Tele-psychiatry(Online Consultation)

In this era of internet and effective communication solutions, distance should be no bar for anyone to access the services of a psychiatrist as psychiatric assessment is primarily based on thorough history taking and mental state examination for which no physical contact is needed. Dr Joseph is available for consultation via video conferencing using appropriate platforms such as Skype, Google, etc as mutually agreed. Appointment times can be more flexible for telepsychiatry appointments to suit the needs of the client depending on their geographical location and work commitments. If such consultations necessitate prescription of medications, signed prescriptions can be forwarded electronically or by post to the client inside India. If any specific health monitoring is required as part of treatment, client will be advised to identify a general practitioner closer to the client’s location who can undertake those tasks. Involvement with NGOs

Dr Joseph provides regular consultation and guidance to select mental health rehabilitation establishments in the community run by NGOs in and around Angamaly.


Psychoeducation and Training

Dr Joseph is available to run psychoeducational seminars and training workshops that would benefit society. This is to be arranged on a case by case basis after discussing the needs of the client. His areas of interest in this regard include behavioural problems in children, parenting guidance, fighting the stigma against mental illness, stress management, team working and conflict resolution.
